I first visited Newfoundland in the mid '60's -- also by chance -- when I was unable to fly out of Ste Pierre et Miquelon, the French territory just off the south coast, due to "capricious" mist which grounded Air Ste Pierre's lone DC-3 flight to Nova Scotia. A group of us hired a fishing boat to take us to Newfoundland so we could fly home via Gander. The scenery and hospitality of the people of Newfoundland has always been outstanding. The 9/11 story about how Newfies opened their hearts and homes to complete strangers brought tears to my eyes as I read this webside on 9/11/02 after seeing a programme last night on PBS about what happened there last year. Joey Smallwood must be smiling from his grave at what his people did.
