Gambo's Accidental Tourists

Back Home Up Next

After the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September
11th, 2001 the town of Gambo played host to more than one thousand of
our neighbours from around the world for four days. We didn't do
anything special. We only tried to be good neighbours, just as we know
they would have done had the circumstances been reversed. To put it
another way-- we think of it all as just another way to define the name
Gambo. We think the word means Home!

The true heroes of this sorry affair are the victims in New York,
Washington and Pennsylvania, and the brave firemen and policemen who
selflessly risked and sometimes sacrificed their lives in trying to
rescue them. The people of Gambo are not heroes in any sense of the word,
and are not deserving of any reward. We were simply trying to be
hospitable, and can only wish that our involuntary visitors come back
again when times are better so that we can show them the true Gambo
brand of Newfie hospitality.

We have had many of our visitors say that they wish to do something to
repay our hospitality. If anyone wishes to do so, they may make a
contribution to the Gambo Medical Trust at P.O. Box 245, Gambo, NF
A0G1T0 Canada. One hundred percent of all contributions to this trust
will be used to purchase emergency response equipment for our Firemen,
ambulances and Medical Clinic, and to provide major equipment for the
James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander. In this way, all contributions
will help us to respond if (heaven forbid) such a disasterous event
should occur in the future.
