Many of you have asked about submitting photos etc. We have two ways to electronically submit materials, email and FTP.
All the photos submitted for posting to the web will be optimized (smaller size and lower resolution) for web viewing before posting. All the included information about the photos will be posted with them as per your instructions. If the photos are high resolution and you wish to make them available to all, they will be posted on the FTP site for downloading as well.
If you are able to Zip multiple files together for transfer either by email or FTP, please do so. This will compress the files into a single smaller file making transfers quicker.
You can attach the items to an email and send it to submissions@theganderconnection.org. Please include information about the photos (captions) to be posted with them.
Many email systems restrict the size and type of files that can be sent as attachments. If your email system has such restrictions or you are sending very large files, > 3 or 4 Mb, then FTP is a much better choice.
File Transfer Protocol — Don't let this term intimidate users who are unfamiliar with it. It is simply another way to move information (files, documents, photos, etc.) over the Internet. FTP was invented just for the purpose of transferring files. If you click on this link
ftp:\\ftp.theganderconnection.org
it will open a 'page' in your browser that (depending on your browser configuration) looks much like a directory or folder listing on your computer. That's because it is just that. The only difference is that these directories or folders are on a remote computer where this site is posted. You can click on these folders and see the files inside them. Depending upon your authorized access in each folder, you can copy files from the FTP folder to your computer (download) or you can copy files from your computer to the FTP folder (upload) exactly like you currently do.
To download a file, simply drag it from the browser window to the folder on your computer where you want to save it. Alternatively, you can right-click the file and select "Copy to Folder..." (Internet Explorer) or select "Save Link As..."(Netscape)
To upload a file, simply double-click on the incoming folder to open it. You may or may not see other files in the folder. You can then drag and drop your files into the open folder just the same as if you were copying it to another folder on your own computer (just a lot slower).
Note: The only folder you can copy to (upload) is the incoming folder.
Please send and email to webmaster@theganderconnection notifying me of any files uploaded so I don't overlook them.
I can handle most document types, Word, Wordperfect, etc., for text submissions. I can also handle most graphic file types, Photoshop, TIFF, JPEG, Bitmap, CorelDRAW, Illustrator, EPS, etc.
If you are preparing a formatted document with embedded photos or illustrations then the best format is to make an Acrobat .pdf file. This type of file can be placed on the site to be viewed in your web browser or can be downloaded for viewing offline. If you don't have the ability to create Acrobat files, you can submit the complete document or just the text and photos and I will create the file for you.
This table list a preference for file submissions. By no means let it stop you from sending other file types as they most likely can be used. It just might take a little more work to use them.
| Complete Formatted Documents† | Text Files | Photos | Illustrations |
| Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) | Microsoft Word (.doc) | JPEG | CorelDRAW (.cdr) |
| Microsoft Word (.doc) | Rich Text Format (.rtf) | TIFF | Encapsulated Postscript (.eps) |
| Rich Text Format (.rtf) | Text (.txt) | Illustrator (.ai) | |
| †Documents will be converted to Acrobat for posting. | |||
You can send text and photos separately and we will prepare the document for viewing according to your instructions. Depending on the size and structure it will either be posted as a web page (HTML) or an Adobe Acrobat document.
If you have photos you would like to share and don't have access to a scanner, you may send them to me at my office or home and I will be happy to scan and post them for you and will return them promptly.
